Can Trash Cans Fit Tesla Model Y’s Trunk?

By Tuan Do

Tesla Model Y has become a popular choice for those seeking a balance between performance, technology, and practicality in their EV. However, when moving from traditional SUVs, some people might wonder if they can still transport trash to the landfill and what trash cans will fit inside the Model Y’s trunk.

Fitting a Trash Can into the Tesla Model Y

One common task for SUV owners is transporting large items, such as trash cans, especially for trips to the landfill or for large clean-up projects. Given the Tesla Model Y’s sleek design and seemingly compact trunk space compared to bulkier SUVs, it’s worth questioning: Can it handle large, awkward items like a standard trash can?

To answer this, I experimented with the Rubbermaid BRUTE 20-Gallon Trash Can with Lid, a popular choice due to its durability and size. The Rubbermaid BRUTE trash can measures 22.9 inches in height and 22.5 inches in top diameter. Despite the Model Y’s seemingly smaller trunk when compared to a traditional SUV like the RAV4, these dimensions align well with the interior space of the Model Y’s cargo area. Surprisingly, the Tesla Model Y accommodated not just one, but two of these cans in the trunk without the need to fold down the rear seats.

Practical Tips for Model Y Owners

If you’re planning to transport trash or other dirty items in your Model Y, here are some tips to ensure a mess-free journey:

  1. Use an All-Weather Cargo Floor Mat: Protect the interior of your trunk with an all-weather cargo floor mat. These mats are designed to trap dirt, spills, and debris, making them ideal for potentially messy tasks like transporting trash cans.
  2. Careful Loading and Unloading: Even though the trash cans fit, they are large and awkward. Be careful when loading and unloading to avoid scratching or damaging your vehicle’s interior.
  3. Secure the Cans: While the Model Y’s trunk can accommodate the trash cans, ensure they are secure during transport to prevent them from tipping over and causing a mess or damaging the interior.
  4. Clean After Use: After transporting trash or other dirty items, make sure to clean your cargo mat and the surrounding areas to prevent odors or stains from setting in.

This makes the Model Y a viable option for those who need an eco-friendly vehicle that does not compromise on practicality. Whether you’re moving to the Model Y from a traditional SUV or considering it for your next vehicle, you can be confident that it can handle much more than just your daily commute.
