EPOMAKER EK21-X VIA Wireless Numpad Review

By Tuan Do

A numpad is essential for professionals who need efficient numerical input, such as accountants, data entry clerks, and financial analysts. It enhances productivity by providing a dedicated set of keys for quick calculations. If you’ve already used a mechanical keyboard, the EPOMAKER EK21-X wireless numpad might be a great accessory on your desk.

The packaging includes three replacement switches, a key/cap puller, a backspace key, and a braided USB-A to USB-C cable, ensuring users have everything they need for setup and maintenance.

The numpad’s build quality is exceptional, with an anodized aluminum alloy shell that not only looks sophisticated but also feels durable. The mechanical switches provide satisfying feedback with a prominent click, and the overall weight of the keypad adds to its premium feel.

The EK21-X offers 3 connection modes: wired, wireless with a USB dongle, and wireless with Bluetooth. The USB dongle is ingeniously hidden at the top side of the numpad, held in place magnetically, making it smooth and easy to remove. I connect the EK21-X via Bluetooth to my Macbook and it displays the battery percentage of the numpad in the system.

The physical switch to toggle between connection modes is located beside the dongle. However, it is puzzling that these settings are not marked on the device itself. Thankfully, I own an Epomaker keyboard with an identical switch order, which I use as a reference. This minor inconvenience could be easily rectified with appropriate labeling on the numpad.

The EK21-X offers robust customization through the VIA app. The process requires downloading a JSON file from Epomaker’s site and loading it via VIA’s Design tab. Customization is further enhanced by the choice of switches and keycaps. I opted for the Mulan switches, which strike a balance between tactile feedback and noise. There is also a media control wheel, which allows for smooth volume adjustments and can be depressed to play/pause media.

The EK21-X is equipped with an LED backlight featuring various patterns, and the lighting can be turned off with the FN+Backspace shortcut. The inclusion of a 1,000mAh battery ensures long-lasting performance, making frequent charging unnecessary.

In summary, the EPOMAKER EK21-X wireless numpad is a well-crafted and highly customizable accessory that significantly enhances productivity. Most people won’t need a numpad but if you do, this is a great choice.
